Karen’s interest in nursing began in high school which led her to the University of Connecticut where she completed an undergraduate degree in nursing. Soon after graduation she moved to Fredericksburg where she has worked for her entire career: first as a staff nurse at Mary Washington Hospital, then as a Public Health nurse at Stafford County Health Department, as well as teaching prepared childbirth classes.
Karen attended Virginia Commonwealth University where she earned a Master of Science in Nursing with a clinical concentration in Women’s Healthcare Nurse Practitioner. From 1985 to 1994, she was a nursing faculty member at Germanna Community College teaching full-time in the Associate Degree program. For the past 20 years, she has practiced as a Women’s Healthcare Nurse Practitioner in Fredericksburg. She is an active member of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners and has seen the role of Advanced Practice nurses become an integral part of health care delivery in the Fredericksburg region.
